On his twitter account, he tweeted or twittled (or whatever the fuck it's called) the following message:

"Here's what I have to say about the Madden curse: Destiny is more powerful than a curse. Whatever is meant to be will happen. Faith."

It's no secret I am a fan of cheesy 80's music. Like, when I bike around the block on my Huffy, I totally get myself all jacked up to the beat of Europe's "The Final Countdown" just like Ben Roethlisberger does when he's been drinking and sees a banging hot chick that doesn't want to fuck him.

Which brings me to my point...

In a perfect world, this kid is unequivocally considered the fucking man. I'm talking about chicks wanting to suck him off just because he entered the room. Everyone would know who he was, and they would want to be at parties he was at. Maybe he would even be able to go on tours opening up for Bruce Springsteen. He would have his own V.I.P. room where chicks would line up to enter into just to ride this hell out of this kid's gigantic hoss.

NYS Attorney General Uses Position for Political Payback

"ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada Jr. accused Attorney General Andrew Cuomo of using a civil lawsuit against him as political payback for the Bronx politician's role in a Senate coup last summer.

Espada accused Cuomo of encouraging the partisan political coup, which froze New York state government last summer for more than a month.

His accusations came the same day Cuomo announced a lawsuit accusing Espada of siphoning $14 million from his government-funded clinic in the Bronx for lavish restaurant meals, trips to Las Vegas and his own campaign.

Espada refused to comment on the suit, except to say that he would address the issues in court. Espada also accused Cuomo of wiretapping his home.

A spokesman for Cuomo declined to comment on Espada's accusations."

Ah, the old "I-organized-a-senate-coup-which-stalled-state-government-for-over-a-month-and-now-the-attorney-general-is-using-his-position-to-call-me-out-on-using-$14-million-of-state-funds-for-meals-and-trips-and-campaigns" defense. That being said, let's think about this for a second. Pedro has a good point. The majority leader of the Senate Democrats has gone above and beyond the call of duty. Not only does he serve in the senate, he also runs a healthcare clinic for poor people with taxpayer's money. Give this guy a medal.

Buffalo Bills projected to draft Jimmy Clausen

Clausen is NFL-ready, his toe injury is healed and he has played in cold weather. Clausen has also displayed a strong arm, which the Bills need for those windy days in Buffalo. Clausen played for a head coach in college who is an excellent mentor for quarterbacks. Quarterbacks always drive up draft boards late in the process.

Pretty much every single mock draft I have seen has the Bills projected to draft Jimmy Clausen, which makes absolutely zero sense. The Buffalo Bills have more unfulfilled needs on their depth chart than my girlfriend – and that includes quite a desire for depth.

The brain trust at One Bills Drive drafting Clausen 9^th overall is akin to building a million-dollar home on some sort of fucking floating raft in the middle of Lake Erie: it’s going to sink. They first need to build a solid foundation through an offensive line that doesn't suck ass (read: that isn’t like the Bills’ current O-line).

Furthermore, let’s not forget that Clausen hasn’t proved a fucking thing during his stint at Norte Dame. His record as a starter is 16-18. I don’t give a shit about his individual stats either. The dude is a proven loser.

This brings me to my ideal wet dream that has the Bills taking a left tackle with the 9^th overall pick, and then trading up into the bottom of the first round to draft Tim Tebow. I don’t really know Tebow’s individual stats, but I do know that he is a national champion quarterback (and a beautiful, beautiful man). I am not saying we start him right away, but the dude is a player. Let him hold the clip board for one season as Trent Edwards gets his shit pushed in as we develop a solid offensive line with Edwards under center.

Also, let’s not ignore the fact that Jimmy Clausen looks like one of the fucking Gotti brothers. Fuck him. This isn’t the Jersey shore. That shit doesn’t fly in Buffalo. And I'm glad his toe injury has healed. What a fucking pussy.

Mostly due to the fact that they had rats running around the kitchens, the sloppiest of the sloppy when it comes to workers behind the counter and an overall unsatisfied feeling with their product. Similiar to the US/Cuba ban (although based in actual substance), I have been steadfast un-supporter of KFC, but their new line of sandwich may change that very, very soon.

Fiscal Stability Begins With Coke

The Ronald McDonald of elected officials continues to increase his uselessness day after day. The man who can not take care of himself and has caused the state more problems that he's worth, is now looking after your children. Gov. Paterson has found a new dangerous substance ruining our society at it's very base, Coke. No, not the coke that he sometimes enjoys in between charging the state for unneeded hotel rooms while cheating on his wife but Coca-Cola.

Gov. Paterson believes the soda tax, his plan to tax sugared soft drinks is just as needed as banning explosives ot cigarettes from children. Beautiful.

The state is hoping to bring in an estimated $465 million by taxing an already over taxed and under-represented public in order to help balance a completely out of whack budget due to year after year incompetence by the dinosaur-like elected officials in New York.

Instead of cutting the fat and taking a hard look at why New York spends so much dam money, it's just easier to tax the hell out of everyone. When parenting fails, government takes over. FAIL.

Bills working on a Tebow

Few things can make the Bills worse this year than last, but thinking that Tim Tebow is going to somehow be the quarterback extrodinaire is one of them.

The Bills have set up a private session to see him perform. Tebow has been projected to be moved in the 2nd or 3rd rounds but that may be too late if the Bills are really interested in him. I'm sure everyone can recall the Bills moving up to draft another schmuck quarterback a few years ago by the name of J.P. Losman, who obviously had nothing on the talent that Tebow possesses. That being said, drafting Tebow at #9 when there are so many other roster holes would be a mistake, but one the Bills have made in the past and will most certainly make again.

Unfortunately for the Bills, heading into this season with Trent Edwards as the quarterback is also not going to be the answer either.

The other major problem with the Bills is the fact that the retirement of Brad Butler has changed their draft strategy. Yeah, sad as it seems, but it's true. They need offensive line help because the 26 year old retired, who would have thought Butler was the lynch pin in the Bills drafting this year.

Such a sad franchise.

Here's to hoping Tim Tebow doesn't turn into Kordell Stewart.

Mayor Urkel & Mr. Irrelevant

Mayor Byron Brown. The name means different things to different people.

Terrell Owens. This name, also means different things to different people.

However, this afternoon, both of them could have shared the same name, Mr. Irrelevant.

Today, Mayor Brown presented Terrell Owens with a key to the city of Buffalo.

WHAT???

Ahhh, but wait, it's an election year, so that's cool. What was his thought process (if any) on this? "Hey, people like the Bills, so if I do this, they'll like me."

BUT, good thing for the city of Buffalo that Brown attached some strings to the key:

City leaders will change the imaginary locks and render the key useless if the Buffalo Bills' new wide receiver doesn't at least equal the 10 touchdowns he scored last season for Dallas. The same thing will happen if the Bills fail to make the playoffs.
"T.O." told cheering fans he doesn't think city leaders will have to use Brown's "revocation clause."
"The 10 touchdowns won't be a problem," he said. "With the help of my teammates, the playoffs shouldn't be a problem, either."
By attaching a performance clause to the key at a ceremony on the steps of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Brown may have been trying to deflect some of the criticism he faced for agreeing to present the honor to the controversial athlete. Many callers to a talk radio show blasted Brown's move, saying such honors should be reserved for people who have accomplished feats that have already enriched Buffalo. Brown defended his decision as he talked with a reporter prior to Owens' arrival.

The Mayor went on to say that this was all done in fun, but I think there may be a bigger picture, the similarities between the way that Owens has detroyed teams and locker rooms has an uncanny resemblance to the destruction of patronage and inneffective leadership that the Brown administration has left in its wake.

Good plan Mayor Urkel, way to show a complete lack of respect for the office and the people you "represent."

They'll give anyone a book deal

The latest in a long line of politicial figures to get her own book deal is one time (hopefully) Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin. Early reports say this book will be a combination of Dr. Seuss and the Bible, but I guess we'll have to wait till 2010 to find out the truth.

Until then, looks like we'll just have to continue to gets bits and pieces of the Palin family via Oprah and Dr. Phil.

It's been too long since we posted last, mostly due to extended vacations, grueling work schedules and late nights down at the 'ol watering hole. Sherwood and I will try to make a better effort to keep things fresh, but you have to understand, with schedules like ours, it's pretty difficult to juggle everything.

With that being said, I stumbled across this gem of an article in the Buffalo News today, regarding the dress code for city building inspectors. According to the article, some of the city's 60 building inspectors were wearing some less than professional attire to work. Buffalo Inspections chief James Comerford, said this is a more stringent dress code, but is a long way from requiring them to wear uniforms. He goes on to tell lawmakers that some of the inspectors "were dressing like they were going to the beach."

Just the fact that this is a story shows how screwed up the city is.

Possible Mayoral candidate Mickey Kearns brought up the possiblilty that the inspectors should wear uniforms, however, president of the inspectors' union, Kevin Fitzgerald said the union would have considered it, but the city didn't agree to pay for them.

The article goes on to point out that the inspectors will receive raises that total nearly 20 percent by 2012--none of which I would imagine has the possibility of being used to but new clothes on their own.

I have worked in a number of different places, some with a uniform policy, some with a dress code, all of which required the individual to provide themselves with the proper attire.

Raising Awareness, Raising Money or Raising Cain

It has long been a favorite pastime of mine to read the Opinion section of the Buffalo News and most specifically “Everybody’s Column.”

Today we have nice little note directed at the Buffalo News political reporter Bob McCarthy. On Sunday, Bob’s column talked about the annual St. Patrick’s luncheon held at the Irish Center, and in the column he noted that the price of the event bounced up to $50. One South Buffalo resident had quite a little problem with this and voiced his opinion. Thomas Heneghan noted that the News is raising it’s price of the paper and this is somehow a reason that Bob should have used to omit the price tag for the luncheon. A complete stretch on its best day.

Thomas rightfully notes that the Irish Center has hosted “national and world leaders, as well as those who sit on the sidelines and opine….” But what confuses me is when Heneghan states that the Irish Center “has served as the last line of defense in an area that is in continual decay.”

What does that even mean? What are they defending? A takeover from Lackawanna? An infiltration from West Seneca?

He goes on to ask the News political beat to put more effort into covering policy issues rather than just talking about campaigns and taking “uniformed shots.” I don’t think Bob took an uniformed shot at the Irish Center, after all, he was there, either received a $50 ticket or paid for one. What is he not informed about?

If they are having money problems, I think that Bob McCarthy is the least of their worries.

I found the comment by Bob McCarthy regarding the ticket price for the 38th annual St. Patrick’s Day civic luncheon to be quite ironic given the price increase enacted only weeks ago by his employer.
The civic luncheon is the main fundraiser for the Buffalo Irish Center, a not-for-profit institution that is home to dozens of cultural organizations and the focal point of Buffalo’s Irish Heritage District.
The Buffalo Irish Center has hosted national and world leaders, as well as those who sit on the sidelines and opine. Monies raised from the civic luncheon go to the upkeep and maintenance of an 80-year-old facility that has served as the last line of defense in an area that is in continual decay.
Perhaps the political beat of The News could put more effort into covering policy discussions and the efforts of not-for-profit organizations to fill ever-growing voids in areas such as ours rather than simply analyzing the gamesmanship of campaigns and taking uninformed shots.

UPDATE: ProFootballTalk.com is reporting some more information on Cutler's agent, Bus Cook in Buffalo. He also represents Broncos tight end Tony Scheffler, but I find it pretty odd that Scheffler's agent would make a trip to Buffalo on his behalf, but a higher profile like Cutler, well that's more likely.

Better at Running from the Law than from a Linebacker

Once again Lynch avoided jail time for a yet another blunder on his unremarkable career as a Bills running back. Lynch has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge in LA and received 80 hours of communty service and a 3 year probation.

This is exactly what gives communty service a bad name, thugs like Lynch get "sentenced" to do community service. Other people participate in community service projects because they want to give back to the community and share the skills they have with others. "Superstars" like Lynch do community service because they continue a string of stupid behavior and get their hand caught in the cookie jar....or in this case, the weed bag.

Lynch went on to release a statement:

“Today I pled guilty to a misdemeanor violation of having a firearm in a vehicle. I am embarrassed by my recent arrest and conviction. I deeply regret that I placed myself in this situation. I have made mistakes in the past. Although I have learned many lessons over recent years, I obviously have not learned enough. I apologize to my family, the Buffalo Bills organization, my teammates, the Buffalo community and Commissioner Goodell. I have already learned from this recent mistake and am sincerely committed to being a more responsible citizen and better representative of the NFL.”

Can anyone seriously imagine Marshawn actually uttering anything that comes close to these words?

Now we have to wait and see what the NFL and Commissioner Goodell will have to say. Maybe Lynch will be th enext Adam Jones, a pick wasted, a talent gone down the tubes and an overall waste of millions of dollars.....time will tell.

Backup at the Border

We are only a few short months away from needing the enhanced driver license to get into the neighbor from the North. I am one of those not included in the numbers being used by the Erie County clerk's office as I have not yet taken the plunge and forked over the money to update my license.

The object of course is to make it easier for Border agents to know who is crossing into the country.

The new enhanced driver’s licenses, which send out a radio signal that produces an image of the traveler and his pertinent information on a computer screen inside the border inspection booth, are expected to speed up crossings, according to U. S. Customs & Border Protection.
“The delays will decrease as officers don’t have to type in the information from the document or examine a variety of documents that have little or no security features, such as birth certificates,” said Kevin A. Corsaro, chief of the Buffalo field office for Customs & Border Protection.

This however, does not take into account the fact that no matter how many times I go over to Canada, I usually end up picking the completely wrong line and watch cars on both the left and right of me zoom into and out of the booth.

The article goes further into detail about the specifics of the licenses, border crossings, etc. but what really struck me is this line:

This all comes as the Peace Bridge, for the first time in two decades, has become the busiest northern border crossing, surpassing the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit, with 6.8 million individuals crossing from Fort Erie, Ont., into Buffalo last year.

The Peace Bridge is the busiest northern border crossing. BUSIEST.

AND WE STILL CAN NOT BUILD A NEW FREAKING BRIDGE!!!!

We are less than a month away from the projected date when you could be the pround owner of a $2500, 35 horsepower Tata Nano; if you live in India that is.

But don't expect any bells and whistles, actually, don't expect much. You're not going to get a radio, any airbags, no passenger-side mirror and only one windshield wiper. All these plus some air conditioning will ad about 30% to your cost.

Just to give you an idea of what this vehicle is like, it's about 2 feet shorter, has a two-cylinder engine that puts out about 35 horsepower and may hit a top speed of 75 mph.

Poor Marshawn finds himself in a little more trouble, first was the gun possession charge, the police say pot was found in the car he was in. Not a great off-season for the Bills running back.

Culver City + Marshawn Lynch = Fail.

Culver City Police Captain Dave Tankenson said officers approached the Mercedes Benz in which Lynch and two other men were sitting inside. When someone rolled down a window, officers said they smelled an odor they recognized as marijuana. Upon searching the vehicle, officers found four marijuana cigarettes … known as blunts … inside. Tankenson said it is not known if the pot belonged to Lynch.

Pro Bowl running back Marshawn Lynch continues to add to his resume, he has now been arrested and charged with felony possession of a concealed firearm.

Culver City police said in a statement Sunday that Lynch was arrested after officers confronted him and two other men in a car and found a loaded firearm in the vehicle.
Lynch was arrested Wednesday for possession of a concealed firearm after officers determined the gun belonged to him. He was released that night on $35,000 bail.

As far as we know, at least he didn't start yelling at the cops asking "Do you know who I am??" as some of Buffalo's finest Bills have done.

Now in addition to running someone over with his car, he can throw up felony charges. A true role model.

Lynch last summer was the subject of a hit-and-run investigation in Buffalo after his luxury SUV struck a woman in the street and sped away.
After nearly a month of posturing from Lynch's lawyers and the Erie County District Attorney, Lynch paid a $100 fine in a plea agreement. He didn't face criminal charges because the woman's injuries weren't serious enough. She received seven stitches at a local hospital.
In 2006, as Lynch was about to enter his junior season at California, he was the target of a drive-by shooting outside his prep alma mater, Oakland Technical. Police determined Lynch was the victim of mistaken identity.
Lynch, who will turn 23 in April, ran for 1,038 yards and eight touchdowns last season. He also caught 47 passes for 300 yards and a touchdown.

Thankfully he can runn fast and catch, otherwise he'd just be in jail.

Peter Cutler's crying and I'm not buying it. His feelings are hurt because of this editorial cartoon reflecting Mayor Byron Brown's State of the City Address.

Here is his letter to the News (no doubt at the direction of his "Boss") that seems to encourage the community to hug the Mayor next time they see him.

For the second time in two years, News editorial cartoonist Adam Zyglis depicted Mayor Byron Brown’s State of the City address with negative imagery.
During his address, the mayor acknowledged challenges that still confront Buffalo, but he appropriately highlighted significant progress that has occurred over the past three years.
Buffalo’s situation is not unique. The long economic decline of former manufacturing- based regions like ours is well documented. But current mayoral administrations in cities like Buffalo are compelled to make decisions and enact policies that address the aftermath of such decades-long decline that produces current problems in their cities.
In his speech, Brown outlined policies that have had a positive impact on the city’s condition, helping to lower crime and stabilize city finances. He also spoke of new initiatives that will continue this progress despite national economic problems. This is what voters elect their leaders to do and it is what they expect them to accomplish.
The Zyglis cartoon was a cheap shot. It unfairly questioned the dedication of many hard-working people in the public and private sectors who are making a difference in pulling Buffalo out of decades of decline toward a future of growth and opportunity.

The best way to do that, birth control. That's right, birth control is the magic bullet we have been looking for to bring the economy out of this slump.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi boldly defended a move to add birth control funding to the new economic "stimulus" package, claiming "contraception will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government."
Pelosi, the mother of 5 children and 6 grandchildren, who once said, "Nothing in my life will ever, ever compare to being a mom," seemed to imply babies are somehow a burden on the treasury. The revelation came during an exchange Sunday morning on ABC's THIS WEEK.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Hundreds of millions of dollars to expand family planning services. How is that stimulus?
PELOSI: Well, the family planning services reduce cost. They reduce cost. The states are in terrible fiscal budget crises now and part of what we do for children's health, education and some of those elements are to help the states meet their financial needs. One of those - one of the initiatives you mentioned, the contraception, will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government.
STEPHANOPOULOS: So no apologies for that? PELOSI: No apologies. No. we have to deal with the consequences of the downturn in our economy.

This is what happens when the people have no voice. New Yorkers are well aware of this, now having a Governor and Comptroller in office, neither elected by the people of the state. And they almost had to fill the AG's office with a non-elected if Gov. Paterson would have picked (who most people saw as the most competent person for the job) Andrew Cuomo to fill the vacancy left by now Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. One would have to figure that this was in the back, or front of Paterson's mind in chosing a replacement. Well, that and whatever Chuck Schumer wanted (read: Moderate).

Just like the discussion as Alan Hevesi left office in disgrace and the legislature (read: Shelly Silver) picked his replacement via the Old Boys Club, Assemblymember Tom DiNapoli, the focus should now shift to the call for a special election to fill the spots of elected officials. Makes sense, no?

Well, in case you are up in the air, the Washington Post has a editorial that looks into 4 different states and how they chose a replacement to their departing Senator.

All of the states in the editorial, Illinois, New York, Delaware and Colorado have all lost Democratic Senators to the Obama Administration. The Illinois fiasco needs no explanation as Gov. Rod Blagojevich has dug himself into a deep hole of shit based on the inability for him to act like an adult and overcome the corruption of power.

Delaware lost Joe Biden, but gained his Chief of Staff, who for all intents and purposes is just holding the seat for Biden's son.

New York's Governor asked for questionnaire's to be filled out by possible candidates but did not make them public. Then you have the he said/she said act that is going on between the Paterson camp and the Kennedy camp as to why Caroline was not picked. You stay Classy New York.

Colorado, the 4th state discussed and has the least amount of drama involved in the replacement process in the view of the Post.

So the question remains, special election or Governor appointment?

This is worse than the infamous no-goal call. For that, we lost the Stanley Cup. For the snub of Sen. William T. Stachowski, we lost the political clout that comes with the chairmanship of the Senate Finance Committee. Western New Yorkers have a right to be angry at Senate leaders, angry at Stachowski and angry at the rest of Western New York’s Legislature delegation.

That delegation watched powerlessly as three downstate Democrats held Legislature leaders hostage in the political struggle involving Democratic control of the Senate. Seniority meant nothing. So, obviously, did whatever passes for clout at this end of the state, despite the fact that Stachowski has served in the Senate for 27 years and several Democrats are long-tenured members of the Assembly.

During last fall’s campaign, Sen. Malcolm Smith — now the Senate majority leader — told voters that Stachowski, then the top Democrat on the Finance Committee, would be named its chairman if the party wrested control of the Senate from the Republicans. It did, though only narrowly.

But Stachowski ended up on the outs as the plum assignment went instead to Sen. Carl Kruger, D-Brooklyn, one of three newly elected Democratic rebels who threatened to support Republicans if they didn’t get what they wanted. Instead, Stachowski was named chairman of the Commerce, Economic Development and Small Business Committee. It’s a leadership position, but it doesn’t offer the power of the Finance Committee, whose chairman can influence the state budget and secure additional money for district projects.

Stachowski seems to have accepted the deal with equanimity, arguing that it was the price he had to pay so that Democrats could control the Senate. Still, Stachowski, unaccustomed to hard election campaigns, ran behind a strong opponent for much of the fall. A stronger candidate — one who did not need as much help from the state party — might have come into leadership negotiations with more influence over their direction. Stachowski is not without fault in this. It’s disappointing he couldn’t deliver.

Western New Yorkers need to ensure that Stachowski and Smith understand local frustration at once again being left out of the loop. State political power is increasingly concentrated downstate, home of the governor, Senate and Assembly leaders, the attorney general, the state comptroller and, now, the Senate Finance Committee chairman.

These officials, especially the governor and legislative leaders, insist that they understand upstate’s needs and will act on them.

Upstaters, lacking significant political influence, can only hope that is true. But it is difficult to find any sincerity or honesty in those claims while we end up with zero and the people responsible for that are the leaders of the executive and legislative branches. The members of this region’s delegation have done very little to work their way into key positions that would allow them to better represent the people who sent them to Albany.

The Real Caroline Kennedy

So what is the real reason that Kennedy "withdrew" her name from consideration for Clinton's former Senate seat. Early reports yesterday cited the health of her uncle, Sen. Ted Kennedy, but that just didn't seem to gel. Then reporrts surfaced that she wasn't dropping out and the original reports weren't true.

Now we have information that involves tax problems and a household employee that may be the reason she "dropped out." But one has to wonder why would tax problems stop her from being Senator if they do not even stop Tim Geitner from being Treasury Secretary. Odd.

What seems to be more in line with the truth is the fact that Kennedy is just not ready nor does she have the capicity to be a Senator based on her interviews and inability to field questions on what she would do as Senator.

Gov. Paterson, who for his part has shown his true calling should have been a game show host due to the way he has handled the job of filling the seat, is now sending his cronies out to say that he has "never had any intention of picking Kennedy."

Right Dave, right.

Democratic operatives have said that Kennedy was in fact that choice, and the choice itself was made a while ago, but Paterson wanted to keep up the suspense. Others, are now saying that was never going to happen. Either way, looks like this will take some time to decifer fact from fiction.

But in the meantime, AG Andrew Cuomo & Rep. Kristen Gillibrand seem to be fast tracked to become the Senate favorites. Of course WNY has a couple of candidates that for the most part have been completely overlooked, speaking of course of Buffalo Mayor and the reason Paterson became the Minority Leader, Byron Brown and Rep. Brian Higgins.

Either way, my bet is whomever is picked to fill the seat will not win re-election when they have to run on their own.

The NCAA couldn't regulate those camps because those youngsters fell below the current cutoff.

"The fact that we've got to this point is really just a sign of the times."

A huge lobster that was destined to adorn a dinner plate is back in the ocean
after a New York City restaurant granted him a reprieve.
The 20-pound crustacean, named George, was returned to the wild Saturday in a rocky cove in Kennebunkport, less than a mile from the summer home of former President George H.W. Bush.
George was transported to Maine by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which had beseeched City Crab and Seafood to allow the lobster to go free.
The activist group says the giant lobster may be up to 140 years old, although conventional standards for guessing a lobster's age put it closer to 80.
It had been caught off Newfoundland, Canada, and lived in the restaurant's tank for about 10 days.

When last I checked we are still in a recession, employment rates are rising, jobs are declining, but it is refreshing to know that most major corporations, and now lobsters, are getting bailouts.

After several lengthy conversations with U.S. Senate hopeful Caroline Kennedy, Rochester-area billionaire Tom Golisano has decided to back her for the job, a source close the Paychex Inc. founder said today.
Golisano is planning to reach out to other leaders across the state to promote Kennedy’s candidacy.
“They’ve been talking a lot, and I think he’s willing to start making phone calls for her and trying to help her out,” the source said.
While Golisano had mixed results in his influence in state Senate races last fall, his support of Kennedy for the Senate could help her gain legitimacy with some upstate leaders who have been wary of whether she would be focused on the region.

Judging from the fact that most peopledon't even understand where Upstate New York is, it makes sense that she will carry on that tradition. Flying in for a ribbon cutting, and jetting back to Manhattan as quickly as possible. Some things never change.

A new year has come, but the old NFL is still here! It didn't take long before 2009 brought us our first NFL arrest, coming from none other than your Buffalo Bills! That's right, the Bills has given us another year of shitty performances on the field, and now they continue with the same shitty performance off the field.

Bills safety Ko Simpson was arrested outside a bar in his hometown of Rock Hill, SC. He was a passenger in a car that was speeding through a bar parking lot at 2am New Year's Day. The driver and another passenger were charged with disorderly conduct after they yelled and cursed at the police.

That's just about the time Ko Simpson decided he would make a complete ass of himself. He started yelling at officers, saying "I'm Ko Simpson with the Buffalo Bills. I am worth millions!"

Ya know what Ko? You're not worth millions. You're worth nothing. You join the ranks of so many players before you that are complete wastes. A 25-year-old ass clown. Well done.

Today the Buffalo Bisons, AAA affiliate of the NY Mets, released their new primary logo. I must say that I do like the way it looks. The color scheme conveys that relationship to the big club and is pretty sharp. There is something about blue and orange that just looks right, especially those shades. I am pretty glad to see that sliding cartoon buffalo and slanted "B" go by the wayside. The red lettering with that dark green accent just didn't look right and the cartoon buffalo. There is no place in baseball for overly kid friendly cartoon characters to be on a teams logo, uniform or otherwise. I'm glad they moved away from the kelly green as well. For awhile there it seemed like there were a lot of teams with that kelly green pushed into their uniforms. Not to mention it didn't fit into the former parent club's (Cleveland Indians) color scheme at all. Well, here's to the new look Bisons!

Good day! I figured that I should post something to keep the dozens of readers we have happy. We sent Strongbridge on assignment abroad for market research. We're thinking of making a push into several markets. We figured once everyone buys up the US, there is going to be a void elsewhere, so we are going to pounce like a cat hopped up on catnip. Here's a quickie:

-It looks like Gov. Patterson is going to sign the bill to collect taxes from sales of smokes from the Rez. If you got some old tires laying around, I think I might know some people that might be looking for a surplus.
-The Bills lost a heartbreaker to the J-E-T-S!!! You really think its a good idea to throw a pass with 2:06 left to go in the game? Especially when Fred Jackson has been dragging guys around the field all day. Shopp and the Bulldog were saying that it was an agressive play call and noone was at fault. Maybe you make that aggressive play call when someone other than J.P. Lostcause is in the game. How's come Mr. Stick-um Hands can't just take the sack (let's face it, he would take it any other time)? The one time you want him to just hold on to the ball and taste the Astroturf, he doesn't and can't hold onto the ball. I hope J.P. has a good real estate agent, because I think there is going to be to be new house on the market.

-I will be in attendance for the International Bowl on Janurary 3, 2008 in Toronto. I am sort of excited to be attending a college bowl game. Chastened auto-industry executives took their case for a federal rescue back to Capitol Hill today, as a top economist warned that the Detroit Three may eventually need more than three times as much aid as the $34 billion they are requesting.

You all remember the first time they were in front of Congress, brought from Detroit to DC via private jets, all to ask Congress for a boatload of money to keep their lucious feasting habits alive. I compared it to someone in a Tux and having been driven by a limo to a soup kitchen for a free meal. Sounds about right.

Some members of Congress seem to think that there is not enough votes to push through a bailout and aren't sure if it is even worth it, others feel differently:

Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd, D-Conn., backed the bailout, saying that letting one of the Detroit Three fail would amount to "playing Russian roulette with the American economy."

Time will tell. Until then UAW execs feel as though GM could bite it by the end of the month. Merry Christmas, see Bethlehem Steel layoff procedures.

"I believe we could lose General Motors by the end of this month," said Ron Gettelfinger, head of the UAW, who said his union agreed to drastic concessions Wednesday for that very reason.
"Some forces beyond our control have pushed us to the brink," said G. Richard Wagoner Jr., chairman of General Motors, who asked for $4 billion to get the company through the rest of this year and as much as $18 billion in total.
"Chrysler needs a $7 billion bridge loan to bridge the current crisis," said Robert Nardelli, the company's chief executive officer. "We believe this is the least constly alternative.
Alan R. Mulally, the chairman of Ford -- the least troubled of the Detroit Three -- struck a less desperate tone, saying the company has slimmed down and refocused on fuel-efficient cars after years of making too many mistakes.

Slimmed down and refocused. Unfortunately, depending on who you talk to, it's too late. Foreign automakers have focused on smaller, more fuel efficient cars for a number of years. All the while, "The Big 3" continued to pump out SUVs at an alarming rate, hoping to feast off the American appetite that leads buyers to spend as much on their car as they do on their house.

Now the automakers are making concessions in order to get their bailout. Much like a child does when he is grounded and promises not to do the same thing again.

In the restructuring plans the automakers submitted to Congress on Tuesday, the automakers stress that they’re now bleeding cash because auto sales have plummeted from an average of 17 million a year in the past nine years to 10.5 million this year.
That sales drop has hit foreign manufacturers as well, but they simply have more cash on hand to weather the storm, said Kim Korth, president at IRN Inc., an automotive consulting firm.
While the Big Three “took too long to get their act together,” their primary problem is not product quality, she stressed.
Instead, “they’re caught in a situation where they have not yet learned how to make money on small cars,” which are increasingly popular, Korth noted.

You can equate SUV to Dinosaur for this exercise. One of the problems that these companies face is the factories that have produced the SUVs are only equipped to produced SUV, thus making it pretty difficult to switch over production to the more fuel efficient, smaller vehicles. Not to mention that GM, Ford and Chrysler have shifted most attention away from upgrading the smaller cars and more attention to building the Escalade Hybrid, which is basically an oxymoron.

There is always the question of quality in their products that people continue to question, and may lead most to buy alternatives, i.e. Foreign cars. Just skimming through Consumer Reports one can note the amount of American cars in the top 10, but one can not help but note the lack of American carrs on the road, or the overall slump in sales across the country.

Whether it is bankruptcy or a bailout, these companies are in trouble, and it's going to take a lot more than tossing money at the problem. It's going to take a concerted effort by all those involved in order to make a diffference.

I was in Venice last year and the night that I got there, it was raining, and parts of St. Mark's square were under water. Not flooded by any means, but you could see huge puddles throughout the square and had to walk around them. After dinner, at around 11pm, I went back to see the square and most of the water was gone. The following day the water was completely gone and things were back to normal. Unfortunately, this is a problem that will continue to occur.

Yesterday however, Venice suffered the highest water levels in more than 20 years, completely paralysing the city.

Buffalo PD is looking to question former Bill Eric Moulds in relation to his part in a fight that took place on Chippewa. Good 'ole Mikey Degeorge is on the scene and telling us that the other person and current Bill are not being questioned. I have heard that the current Bill they are refering to is none other than offensive spark plug Josh Reed. Rumor has it they beat up an Iraq War Veteran.

A Buffalo Police Department spokesman says investigators are looking into claims of a bar fight involving a former Buffalo Bills player.
A source close to the situation tells 2 On Your Side that police would like to speak with former Bills receiver Eric Moulds about the altercation.
There are conflicting reports about when it occurred, but we're told a video surveillance camera caught a fight on tape outside Liars on Chippewa.
Multiple sources tell us the man who claims to have been the victim of a fight says Eric Moulds was the other person involved with him.
Police spokesman Mike Degeorge would only say that police are investigating an incident that's said to involve a former Bills player.
He also added that a current Bills player was also there at the time but was not involved in any way.
No charges have been filed.

Multiple sources tell us that Giants receiver Plaxico Burress has shot himself in the leg.
Apparently, Burress was carrying a loaded gun. And the gun went off.
The incident happened on Friday night/Saturday morning. His condition currently isn’t known.
Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com also is reporting this one, and he’ll soon have a story up with additional details.
Though at this point the player’s health and well being is the primary concern, what the hell was he doing with a loaded gun?
It also remains to be seen whether he faces charges for carrying the loaded gun, and whether he ultimately encounters scrutiny from the league for violating the Personal Conduct Policy.
UPDATE: Glazer reports that Burress spent the night in the hospital, and that his injuries are not life threatening. Per Glazer, the team is still gathering information regarding the incident.

Representative Charles B. Rangel has helped raise $11 million for a City College of New York school of public service to be named in his honor. In recent months, as questions have emerged about his fund-raising, he has insisted that he has kept his efforts to attract donors scrupulously separate from his official duties in Congress.
But Congressional records and interviews show that Mr. Rangel was instrumental in preserving a lucrative tax loophole that benefited an oil-drilling company last year, while at the same time its chief executive was pledging $1 million to the project, the Charles B. Rangel School of Public Service at C.C.N.Y.
The company, Nabors Industries, was one of four corporations based in the United States that were widely criticized in 2002 and 2003 for opening offices in the Caribbean to reduce their federal tax payments. Mr. Rangel was among dozens of representatives from both parties who bitterly opposed those offshore moves and, in 2004, pushed unsuccessfully for legislation to make the companies pay more tax.
But in 2007, when the United States Senate tried to crack down on the companies, Mr. Rangel, who had recently been sworn in as House Ways and Means chairman, fought to protect them. The tax shelter for the four companies was preserved, saving Nabors an estimated tens of millions of dollars annually and depriving the federal treasury of $1.1 billion in revenues over a decade, according to a Congressional analysis by the nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation.

Even though the Chiefs scored first, the Bills actually seemed like they came to play. Whether it was the game plan or the fact that the Chiefs going into this game have lost 18 of their las 19, we won't know til next week.

Over the past 4 loses, the Bills did whatever they could to defeat themselves, yesterday was different, yesterday they actually won the turnover battle. McKelvin had to great picks, the defense recovered fumbles and the offense didn't turn it over.

Trent Edwards. As I have said before< i'm no big fan of Losman, thought he never should have been drafted so early, etc. I also thought we should have taken Brady Quinn in the draft, and as one friend said to me yesterday (he doesn't like Edwards btw) "No more California quarterbacks."

Yesterday Edwards played a good game, even going so far as to find that ellusive Lee Evans a few times. Of course the one play that sticks out is the play action early in the game:

So on the Bills' first possession Sunday, it was third-and-goal from the Chiefs' 1-yard line. Offensive coordinator Turk Schonert sent in the play. Edwards faked the handoff to Marshawn Lynch, whirled to his left, saw a wide-open Robert Royal to the left in the end zone — and heaved the football 2 feet over his head.
Lynch scored on the next play, taking his QB off the hook. But when Edwards reached the sideline, offensive line coach Sean Kugler was waiting.

Either way, it was the Chiefs. A team they should have routed, because that's what you do to bad teams. They still let up 31 and looked pretty bad on a few deep passes, George Wilson tripped over his own feet trying to drop back in coverage. And Larry Johnson could have driven a truck through some of the holes the O-line opened up for him. And they're still going to need a lot of help to get into the playoffs.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Here's some food for thought: If you have nude photos of your wife on your cell phone, hang onto it.
Phillip Sherman of Arkansas learned that lesson after he left his phone behind at a McDonald's restaurant and the photos ended up online. Now he and his wife, Tina, are suing the McDonald's Corp., the franchise owner and the store manager.
The suit was filed Friday and seeks a jury trial and $3 million in damages for suffering, embarrassment and the cost of having to move to a new home.
The suit says that Phillip Sherman left the phone the Fayetteville store in July and that employees promised to secure it until he returned.
Manager Aaron Brummley declined to comment, and other company officials didn't return messages.

Trottin' Turkey

Well, I did it. I am officially registered to run in this year's Turkey Trot! I am a little worried about the distance, but I think I have a strategy that will take care of that. I am going to run the first 2 miles or so, take a bit of time to regroup (walk) and then hopefully finish the race strong. I've had people tell me that the adreneline of the race will give you a little more energy to run. I just hope that's true. Hope to see you on Turkey Day! Gobble, gobble, gobble!

Travis Henry has more problems. If not the lackluster career, the plethora of kids or the cocaine, now he is having some child support issues. Something that is bound to happen when you have 9 kids, no job and a coke problem. Hey, I'm just saying.

Henry was back in court today, trying to reduce the child support payments for one of his children. Travis wants to change the $3,000 a month payment to his son's mother. His lawyer argues that since Henry is out of the NFL, the payment should be reduced.

Henry wants to modify an order to pay $3,000 a month to the boy’s mother, Jameshia Beacham. His lawyer said the amount should be reduced now that Henry is unemployed — and likely out of the National Football League for good.
Atlanta attorney Randall M. Kessler said Henry was released by the Denver Broncos because of his age — he’s 30 — and because of an injury.

Good for you Travis. You screwed up, and now you want a bailout. What?! Wait a minute, this sounds familiar.....

“He’s got child support obligations across the country, and he’s got zero income,” Kessler told Judge Clarence Seeliger.
Henry also has other expenses. He was arrested last month in an alleged cocaine deal, and was released after posting a $400,000 bond.
Seeliger set the child support payments last year, when Henry was working as a running back. The judge also ordered Henry to establish a $250,000 trust fund by last spring.
The judge’s order noted that Henry had squandered money, spending $100,000 for a car and $146,000 for jewelry, and said the fund was required as backup should Henry fail to make payments.

$100,00 for a car. Well, in Travis's defense, one does need a sweet ride if someone is going to be transported coke across state lines. And $146,000 for jewelry is easily explained away too, I mean, who doesn't need some good bling??

The mother's lawyer is argued against reducing the payments, because, who can afford to raise a child on just $3,000 per month in this economy.

Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, who said after his team tied the Bengals on Sunday that he wasn’t aware games could end in ties, said today that he doesn’t feel bad about his ignorance.
When a reporter asked McNabb today if he regrets not knowing the rule, he answered, “No. Because I think 100 percent of everybody in the league knows now. So if I’m kind of a trend-setter, then I’ve kind of set the trend.”
So McNabb thinks he deserves credit for putting his own ignorance on display, because the very public way he’s been corrected has informed his fellow players? And he doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with his ignorance being publicly displayed?
“It didn’t make me feel bad at all,” McNabb continued today. “I was truly being honest. And the thing about it is, now other people are saying they didn’t know it either. Am I wrong for that? No. Should I have known that rule? There’s a lot of rules that coaches, officials, players don’t know.”
There may be a lot of rules that players and coaches don’t know. We’d like to think there aren’t a lot of rules that officials don’t know, but let’s assume for the sake of argument that McNabb is right about that, too. But a rule as fundamental to the game as how overtime ends? McNabb’s ignorance of that rule is absolutely inexcusable.

McNabb isn't the first trend setter for the stupid, and he won't be the last.

A Detroit bailout?

Former Massachusetts governor and this year's presidential candidate Mitt Romney has a take on the possible Detroit bailout.

If General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye. It won’t go overnight, but its demise will be virtually guaranteed.

Without that bailout, Detroit will need to drastically restructure itself. With it, the automakers will stay the course — the suicidal course of declining market shares, insurmountable labor and retiree burdens, technology atrophy, product inferiority and never-ending job losses. Detroit needs a turnaround, not a check.

I love cars, American cars. I was born in Detroit, the son of an auto chief executive. In 1954, my dad, George Romney, was tapped to run American Motors when its president suddenly died. The company itself was on life support — banks were threatening to deal it a death blow. The stock collapsed. I watched Dad work to turn the company around — and years later at business school, they were still talking about it. From the lessons of that turnaround, and from my own experiences, I have several prescriptions for Detroit’s automakers.

As the election season came to end, we were all waiting for the campaign promises we all heard to start to come to fruition. As the legislature went back into session yesterday to provide an avenue to stop the ballooning deficit, we knew it was only a matter of time before the state was back on the right track.

Right.....

A public bitching session between leader of both houses and the Governor provided nothing but a forum to play "whose is bigger" and was no help to the people of the state. But was anyone surprised? The Buffalo News has printed a list of local officials phone numbers, so people can call and start complaining about how the state is broke. The session that was called to shore up a $1.5 billion gap, proved a futile exercise and now the latest projections for the 2009-10 budget are $15 billion.

Pretty cool huh?

This reads like a project for a government class, not a real life situation where people's lives are affected.

Happy Sunday Western NY! Its been awhile since we've posted here at Blog on Weck, so here's a little something to hold you over. The Bills are playing on Monday Night Football this week and I plan on being. I'm not too happy about the weather forecast (60% chance of snow and low of 26 degrees). For those of you going I found this as a guide to dressing for cold weather (pdf reader required). I think that I might blog from the game, provided my fingers don't freeze off. I haven't figured out how I am going to do this but I will definitely do something. I just hope it doesn't turn into another heart breaker like last year's Dallas game. I would hate to have to spend the night talking friends and relatives down from the ledge. It was at that game where my father in-law gave me the line "See God really does hate Buffalo!"

Good day Western NY. It's shaping up to be a great night for trick-or-treating. Be careful when your out tonight, you know how those kids get when they are all hopped up on sugar. Here's an installment of my random thoughts for the day:

- Strongbridge wrote a post about the China King in Hamburg being shut down for butchering a deer in the store. Granted a store probably isn't the best place to be cutting up a deer but when I first heard this story it didn't strike me as being that bad. I'm sure this has to do with my Western PA upbringing. Growing up in a community that shuts down schools for the first day of deer hunting season, butchering a deer indoors just doesn't seem odd. If a garage is considered indoors, i've taken part in several indoor butcherings. Now I am hungry for some venison stir-fry.

- John Daly was arrested, again, for being drunk outside of a Winston-Salem, NC Hooters. I think its awesome that John 12-pack never gets hauled out of some high class night club in NYC. Nope, you gotta drag him out of the Hooters in Winston-Salem. Damn it man! I'm sure he was just enjoying some chicken wings and a couple of pitchers. You can't tell me he would be a great guy to hang out with.

- WTF! Why do they have to tell you the reasons for giving a movie a certain rating? I heard an advert for a movie and they said the movie might have some "scary scenes." Are you serious Clark? I didn't see that warning for "Sex in the City?" Sarah Jessica Horseface scares the living Jesus out of me.

When you drag a dead deer through the restaurant and start to slaughter it, chances are, that someone will notice. That seems to be the case at 5999 South Park Ave in Hamburg, location of the now shut down, China King "restaurant."

The Erie County Health Department shut down the chinese eatery on Friday after an inspector found employees butchering a deer inside. Health Commissioner Dr. Anthony J. Billittier IV said they do not know whether the deer was hunted or was road kill that they dragged inside. I have heard that it was road kill and they dragged the carcass through the front door. Awesome.

The Commissioner also said that he does not think that any of the meat made it into any of the delicious creations that used to be created by owners John Zhang and Wei Zhen Ma, who coincidentally, could not be reached for comment. Hmmm....odd.
